Concert Piece
Derived from Paganini's 6 Sonatas, Op.2 - specifically, No. 6 in A Minor - "Mille Grazie" is a virtuoso solo piece composed for the tenor horn. It was written for Arfon Owen and was commissioned by Stavanger Brass Band and Allan Withington as an integral component of their 2022 SIDDIS Brass program, of which Arfon won the prize of 'Best Soloist'.
The composition commences with an elegant and melodic passage, lightly accompanied by the piano. A shift in tempo ushers in the central theme of the piece, as the pace quickens with a valtz-like rhythm. As the composition progresses, its complexity steadily mounts, leading to a brief, slower, lyrical interlude just before the magnificent and virtuosic grand finale.
