Concert March
Burry Port (Porth Tywyn in Welsh) is a small seaside town west of Llanelli in Carmarthenshire, Wales. On the edge of Carmarthen Bay, Burry Port’s harbour has played its part in history: Amelia Earhart landed there as the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Indeed, although a small town, Burry Port punches above its weight in terms of musicality too; it’s proud musical heritage includes being the home to Burry Port Opera, Burry Port Male Voice Choir, Burry Port Town Band, and the hometown of famous musical theatre tenor, John Owen Jones. 2022 saw Burry Port Town Band celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Burry Port Town Band reformation in 1972.
Burry Port Town Band commissioned this march based on the hymn tune ‘Burry Port’ and the tune itself was rediscovered in 2016 by Tab John, and his wife Hilary, in a local Bric-a-brac shop, hidden amongst other old books and papers. This commission was made possible through the support of Ty Cerdd - Music Centre Wales.
